Journal #8In what ways did Jonas's world seem perfect? What were some of the things missing from Jonas's world? What are some of the reasons that Jonas felt had to run? How much would you be willing to give up to live in a safe and secure world? Would you give up as much as the people in Jonas's community Jonas lived in a community where violence is prohibited, where there are rules and regulations. If you don't follow the rules there are consequences and punishments that you could possibly face. You may think that having no crime or everything the same would make the community perfect, it doesn't. Love, Hope, and Joy where missing from the lives of the people in the community. People need to experience these feelings to experience true happiness. Jonas felt he had to run because, he knew that these real feelings, and that real life, existed "elsewhere". He also escaped to save Gabriel. If he hadn't have taken Gabriel, he would've been killed. I believe that I would willing give up living a normal life if I were given the chance in Jonas's community because I wouldn't understand what I would be missing. If I knew I was missing out on things like; a true family, love with others and grandparents, I would not want it to be left out of my life. But, on the other hand If I had never experienced these things, I would probably be curious and still, want to experience these things.

Journal #7Think about music and how much a part of your day it is. What kind of music do you hear, and where do you hear it? What is your favorite kind of music? In chapter 20, it becomes clear that only The Giver can hear music. Why do you think the community has no music? Why would it have been excluded from their experience?Music is a wonderful aspect of life, with so many different styles, instruments, lyrics and artist. Whenever I'm doing homework or just sitting around, I'm always listening to music. Music is heard everywhere from; the elevator, to the spa and even in restaurants. My favorite style of music is Pop and my favorite artist is, Beyonce. I think the community has no music, because music helps you express your individuality and yourself. It was probably excluded from the community to not allow people to be able to do these things. The community uses Sameness to keep everything the same and to keep everyone from expressing their feelings and what they truely believe.
Journal #6Jonas spends all day with The Giver. What do you notice about their relationships? Jot down things they say to each other. Note how they act around each other. What question do you have about their relationship? How does it differ from other relationships in the community? Jonas and the giver spend all day together, in the Annex room. The Giver is giving Jonas memories of goodness and some memories of tragedy. They bond over each memory. The Give shows Jonas true love and I believe acts a a father figure to him. He teaches him the true ways of the world, and spends a lot of meaningful time, in an extremely important time in Jonas's life. The other relationships in the community are full of non-real relationhships with no real feelings.
Journal #5In this section Jonas discovers colors for he first time. What would that be like? Take a walk and notice everything of a color. Write about your walk. You might like to make a collage from magazine pictures depicting what you saw. Seeing colors for the first time, would be strange. Our world today is full of color, but in Jonas' world, they live in Sameness, what is believed to be black and white. Every object in the universe has its own unique color, and it can be told apart from other things, because of that distinctive color. In "The Giver", their world is full of Sameness, but in the Real World, everyone is different and that helps keep life interesting. If everyone was the same, thier would be nothing to learn about and nothing to discover about yourself.
The bright yellow sun shines on the vibrant green grass. Small woodline creatures run from out of the shawdows and into the sunlight. The blue birds chirp in the baby blue sky and fly high up into the fluffy clouds above. The crystal clear turquoise lake, is full of colorful fish, making thier way upstream. The water, makes a small splash as the waves crash upon the rock, wetting those around it. Journal Question #4Before each Twelve receives his or her Assignment, the Chief Elder tells stories about that child. Imagine you are one of the New Twelves. What stories would the Chief Elder tell about you? If I was a Eleven, about to become a Twelve, I would guess that the Cheif Elder would tell the story of my first day of school. As a child, I was always upbeat and bubbly, so I was extremely excited for my first day of school. Most of the other childern about to have their first day, would be crying or clutching on the their parent for dear life, but I wasn't. I left my mother with slight smile and a wave, and excitably ran off. I actually loved school, every morning I would barely even say goodbye to my mother, I always had fun at school, and I still do! I think the Cheif Elder would see my childhood as, a silly child, who is always happy, similar to Asher.
Journal Question #3Continue to predict what you think will happen next in the story. Talk about your previous predictions. Has the way in which you make your predictions change? I predict that in the upcoming chapters of "The Giver", written by Lois Lowry, Jonas will recieve his assignment. I think that Jonas will be intrigued by his assignment and wonder why he recieved it. I have a feeling that Jonas will be different from his other group members. I think this because all the other Elevens pretty much know what they would like to receive or become when they are older. Jonas has voluntered in all different places and has not really found where he belongs. I think Jonas will become distant with his friends and family and receive an assignment that will change his life.
Journal Question #2Lily is looking foward to becoming a Nine and getting a bike. Have you ever had to wait until you were a certian age before you recieved a specific thing or privilege? Make a timeline showing different things and activities that you were allowed to do as you got older. As you go through life, you realize that there are some things that you can't do. For example, you have to wait till the age of 17 to get your drivers license, and you have to wait until the age of 21 to drink alcohol. In the novel "The Giver", written by Lois Lowry, there are rules and ages when you receive certain things. At the age of Nine you receive a bike and at the age of Twelve you receive your assignment. Different ages bring new privileges and new opportunities.
When I turned Nine, I recieved my first flip-cellphone, and I only was allowed to use it to text and call three people: my mom, my dad, 911. But, when I turned Ten, I recieved my first I-phone 4 and I was given full calling and texting privileges When I turned Twelve last May, and as I'm about to turn Thirteen I have been allowed to go out of the house more and go places with friends. When I was younger, my parents would not let me, for example, go to the mall alone or other places with friends. But now, as long as I have my cellphone and I'm with a group of friends, I'm allowed to go out and have fun. Journal Question #1 |
